Since 1999, the National Park Service established and monitored 72 fire effects monitoring plots at Ozark National Scenic Riverways, including 2 plots established as recently as 2015. These plots are in glade, woodland, and fen natural communities spread across 16 burn units. The data from these plots has helped guide management decisions such as burn unit creation or expansion, burn unit prioritization, fire reentry timing, and mechanical removal of cedar trees. The data confirm that the original written fire effects objectives of 1998 have been achieved and maintained, but not without some surprises.
